New York City is set to revolutionize beach safety with the deployment of high-tech drones equipped with life-saving tools. Starting May 24, these drones will patrol the city’s 14 miles of beachfront daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering rapid response capabilities to swimmers in distress.
Each drone is outfitted with auto-inflating life rafts and speakers that can communicate directly with beachgoers, providing real-time instructions and warnings. In a unique touch, the drones will feature pre-recorded messages in Mayor Eric Adams’ voice, aiming to deliver calming guidance during emergencies.
The initiative comes in response to a concerning rise in beach-related incidents, with seven drownings reported in 2024—the highest since 2019. The drones, previously tested in 26 rescues last year, will also monitor for dangerous water conditions and marine life, including sharks.
Complementing the drone patrols, the FDNY and NYPD will increase their presence with additional boats and all-terrain vehicles to support search and rescue operations. Lifeguards will be stationed at beaches from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., ensuring a multi-layered approach to beach safety.
Mayor Adams emphasized the city’s commitment to a safe and enjoyable summer for all residents and tourists, urging beachgoers to swim only when lifeguards are present, avoid alcohol, and heed rip current warnings.
This innovative approach positions New York City at the forefront of integrating technology into public safety measures, aiming to provide swift assistance and enhance the overall beach experience for millions of visitors this summer.
